Paint a Picture for Water Conservation – Caledon’s First Annual Rain Barrel Artist’s Collection

Rain barrels are often seen as characterless and boring. Paint a Picture for Water Conservation aims to transform this normally drab outdoor feature into a masterpiece for the garden. We need your help to do this! Artists, students, and creative Caledonians are asked to submit ideas for an artistic rain barrel design.

Help Caledon make a statement! Your challenge is to create a beautiful rain barrel design that would fit into any garden setting. Applications are due April 1, 2011.

10 designs will be chosen and painted with your help. Decorated rain barrels will be displayed for one month at high traffic areas in the community starting on May 28. On July 1st, homeowners will have the opportunity to purchase their favorite barrel through an online auction. Proceeds from this auction will be used to support the environmental education efforts of ecoCaledon.

The overarching goals of this project are three-fold; to promote the use of rain barrels for single family dwellings, to promote water conservation, and to educate the public on the positive impact that they can have on the health of our local rivers through the re-use of rain water at home.

What is a rain barrel you ask?
Rain barrels capture rainwater from your rooftop. This water would normally run into a storm drain, culvert or ditch before flowing directly into our local river, carrying all pollutants that it picks up along the way. Rain water that is captured in your rain barrel is fresh and clean and can be used to water your veggie patch, potted flowers and hanging baskets.
