The purpose of this activity: First, to introduce people to the concept of repurposing, or giving a new use to an old or otherwise unwanted item. Repurposing gently used t-shirts keeps them out of the landfill and creates a new bag that can be enjoyed for years to come. Second, the project encourages people to find reusable alternatives to plastic bags. Plastic bags are manufactured from non-renewable resources and, while they are often recyclable, they frequently end up polluting our landfills and waterways.
Overall Benefits: This activity is a great springboard for discussions about the 3 Rs. It is fun and easy to make and opens people’s eyes to the possibilities for repurposing other items they have at home.
