Reducing Food Waste

UPCOMING ecoCaledon Drawdown Project: Reducing Food Waste –help us get started….

Program Background: Reducing Food Waste

Food waste has become a major global concern. It is estimated that as much one third of food produced for consumption is wasted in one form or another. In North America alone, 168 million tons of food is wasted every year. In Canada, roughly $31 billion worth of food is wasted each year due to over production, product damage and imperfect best-before labeling, and wastefulness in home kitchens (York Region – Food Waste Reduction Strategy).

Here is a recent article in the Toronto Star on reducing food waste.

There are numerous ways that we can address food waste at both the retail and consumer level.

Project Objective: To reduce food waste in both residential and non-residential sectors throughout the Town of Caledon.

We are currently trying to assess how much food waste we produce and how best to deal with it. We understand some of the challenges and want to see how we might

bring together a possible alternative that would reduce food waste and lessen the impact on climate change.

If you are a retail or food service establishment in the Town of Caledon we would appreciate your input on current food waste management practices and challenges you face. Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey through the link or QR code below. We thank you for your cooperation.
